Diabetes Mellitus has reached epidemic proportions in India, with the urban areas bearing the brunt of this multisystemic disease. As life expectancy increases, the number of patients who develop target organ involvement is increasing, with foot ulcerations being of immediate concern to the surgical specialties. On one hand, Diabetic Foot increases the dependency of the ageing population and on the other hand, the younger working population is at higher risk of compromised livelihood due to earlier age of incidence and time to complications.

The necessity of educating the medical fraternity on the various nuances of diabetic foot care remains relevant with the advances in understanding of biomechanics, pathophysiology, diagnostics, surgical options and rehabilitation.
